Dark Shadows

2012 is shaping up to be a great year for gothic horror! Not only do we have the release of The Woman in Black and The Raven to look forward to, but also Tim Burton's, Dark Shadows. Entertainment Weekly has unveiled this first look at the movie which stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Dark Shadows is based on a gothic horror television series, from the 1960s, about a 200 year old vampire, Barnabas, and the creepy goings on at his ancestral estate, Collinwood Manor. Perfect subject matter for Tim Burton, I'd say!

Dark Shadows is due out May 2012.

  1. Michelle Pfeiffer has Facebook fish face. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  2. Hi pensive,

Actually, I didn't even realize it was Michelle Pfeiffer until I read she was part of the cast.

  3. I'd recognize her anywhere. Because her womb is so polluted. ; ) Also, I just figured out why you don't show up in my Haunted Blogs and fixed it. Yea! I win!

  8. I am def curios to see how this film is. I use to love watching Dark Shadows when I was younger (in reruns) and then tried watching it a couple yrs ago and couldn't get into it. So this will be a truly new slate watch for me and I hope that it turns out good.

  9. I was utterly fascinated by Barnabas as a four year old. I'll be interested to see if the magic is still there!

  13. Hi Leo,

If I had to choose, I'd say that 'The Woman in Black' is the one I'm most looking forward to as well. The original story is very creepy so they have great material to work with, and from the trailers I've seen, they've got the aesthetics just right. It's very nice to be spoilt for choice with so many gothic horrors though.

    Hi Slowdeath,

I've never seen the original 'Dark Shadows', but I saw some episodes from the 1990s remake series so I have an idea of the basic story. Same as you, I'm hoping this version will be good.

    Hi Lady M,

Well, Johnny Depp has a special sort of magic all his own so if anybody can make a revamped Barnabas fascinating, I think it's Johnny! ;)

    Hi Jessica,

Yes, I guess the buzz is really about to start with this movie. The Entertainment Weekly link has more information on the film and the characters.

    Hi Adsila,

Yes, it's always a gamble with remakes, but if anybody can make a go of this subject matter, I think it's Tim Burton. I read that both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are huge fans of the original series.

    Hi Reina,

Sweet Johnny Depp, indeed! ;) I know what you mean about 'American Horror Story'. I thought the same thing when I first saw the photo. I imagine 'American Horror Story' is at least partly inspired by 'Dark Shadows'. The original 1960s series had a photo of the cast all together in a room so 'Dark Shadows' definitely got there first. :)

  14. I used to race home from school to watch the original show on day time TV. It was a soap, and at the beginning there was no vampire. Then Banabus shows up and the show just took off. It now has a cult following.

I had once said--way before it was announced that Johnny Depp would do a remake of this--that Depp would make an excellent vampire (and wondered why he hadn't done so), and it wasn't more than a few weeks later that ta-da! the announcement was made. I had chills. I can't wait to see this one! I'll mark it on my walls!

Have a great holiday everyone! ~Lorelei

  15. Hi Lorelei,

Yes, I read somewhere that the show took off after the supernatural elements were added. Makes total sense to me. I wish everything had supernatural elements!! :)

I'm sure Johnny Depp will make an excellent vampire!! In fact, just thinking about Johnny Depp as a vampire is taking me to a happy place! Hee hee.

    Happy Holidays, Lorelei!
